OUR PROGRESS
Developing the forest sensor and preparing for testing.
Velaya is at the sensor prototype stage. Here is what we are working on and what needs to happen before a field pilot.
THE WORK NOW
Build the prototype. Test it before a field pilot.
We are developing the forest sensor prototype and Velaya Cloud. Local tests are the next step towards understanding whether the observations can support a useful warning.

CURRENT DEVELOPMENT STAGE
What testing needs to establish
- Observation
- Can the prototype produce useful, repeatable observations?
- Everyday conditions
- How do changing surroundings affect those observations?
- Use by a person
- What information makes an event clear enough to assess?
Current
Sensor proof of concept
Develop the prototype and establish what it can demonstrate.
Next
Local tests
Check repeatability, ordinary environmental changes and practical reliability.
After local checks
A scoped field trial
Agree a site, responsible people and the questions to assess in real conditions.
From the results
Refine the device and platform
Use the findings to improve both the field equipment and Velaya Cloud.
Velaya Cloud is being developed alongside the sensor. Field testing will help shape the information shown to the person reviewing a warning.
Field performance, coverage and operating readiness have not yet been established.
Discuss a forest site for a future pilot.
Tell us about the woodland you manage, who would review a warning and what you would want a trial to establish.
Discuss a future pilotBuilding an early wildfire warning system.

What should a wildfire warning tell you?
A location, a time and enough context to decide what to check. That is the task behind Velaya Cloud.

From forest sensor prototype to field pilot
What local tests need to establish before we can learn from a pilot in the forest.

Why we are building Velaya
Why we are developing forest sensors and what earlier warning should mean for the person looking after the land.
